Salt water hot tub cost savingsMaintaining you spa or hot tub with a chlorine generator and natural kitchen supplies will significantly cut your costs. Traditional Chlorine or Bromine treatments foran actively used hot tub will run anywhere from $200 - $600 a year. The great disparity is caused by many of the tub venders getting into the chemical business to continue selling customers products after the sale of the tub. There products, though wrapped in fancy sales language, are really not very different than others you can buy on the market - a true waste of money! Once you start a traditional program for maintaining your spa, you will find quickly that the few chlorine or bromine kits the dealer gave you will not be enough. Oh, no, there are a dozen different chemicals from hundreds of different brands you can buy to put into your water! There are even scents and oils to add when you have too many chemicals and don’t want to smell like that! All of these chemicals leave a residual in the water. Some of what you put in will be used or evaporate, but most is left there just floating around. This is why traditional spa maintenance calls for your water to be drained and refilled 2-4 times a year – to get rid of the chemical soup. Spa Damage from ChemicalsSecondly, many of these chemicals can actually harm your tub! The sanitizers and additives that come in powder or tablet form will always include a percentage of soda ash. This will lower the alkalinity of the water – sometimes too much. If your water’s total alkalinity gets too low, it will start damaging the metal parts of the tub or possible discoloring the shell itself. It will almost certainly also irritate the skin of your guests! Of course there are other additives to stop this. But, they don’t tell you that all the other additives they already sold you caused it! Chlorine Generators will Cost Less
According to Markus Brunner of Forest City Pool and Patio in London, Ontario, "...initially installing a saltwater system can cost as much as $400. But once you factor in the savings in chlorine and other chemicals, as well as reduced maintenance and wear and tear on the pool itself, he estimates that a saltwater chlorine generator can pay for itself in as little as one year. When a salt water tub is maintained and running – heavy use or not – it smells good, your skin smells good and feels smooth and soft.
